Two winter systems to affect MD

(Updated: Thursday 22:00) by Chief Meteorologist Gerard Jebaily

The Fox 45 Weather Authority has issued a *WEATHER ALERT* for Friday and again Monday for hazardous winter weather.

Snow will become likely as each system arrives, and hazardous road conditions are expected during each passing storm.

The first system to arrive on Friday will bring some afternoon showers that could change to snow as temperatures drop later in the evening. A winter weather advisory has been issued.

The snow may fall heavy enough in some areas to overcome the above freezing road temperatures and still lead to slush accumulations, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Expect the first part of the day to be dry and cool, but temperatures will rise into the low 40s. But the afternoon and evening can be dangerous, as the rain, which changes to snow, can very quickly reduce visibility and make the roads slippery.

The snow Friday night will only be a heavy dusting to about an inch, but could quickly accumulate under the heavier showers covering some roads and leading to some hazardous driving conditions.
Any snow or wet patches left over could freeze as temperatures drop Friday night, leading to slippery patches.

The second winter storm is developing far out in the Pacific and will not arrive until Monday.

As the storm develops, it will track across the eastern half of the United States, bringing many impacts from the central plains to the east coast.

Snow totals are hard to pin down this far in advance since the storm is still several days away and forecast models are highly variable, but significant snow accumulations appear likely for most of the state

There is a good chance of accumulating snow from Monday’s winter storm. Make plans to avoid traveling as much as possible, as roads are likely to be very dangerous.

All forecast models within this storm’s range indicate significant snowfall, but the reliability of any of these is still very low until the system can move onshore and be better sampled by ground measuring stations and weather balloons to help provide valuable information on the expected strength and track of the storm.

While Friday and Monday are Weather Alert Days. Saturday looks cold and windy for the Ravens game, but dry. Temperatures are expected to take a further dip into next week behind Monday’s winter storm.
