Verizon user throws out $3.85 payment from $100m settlement – says ‘they could have kept the cash’
VERIZON users have mocked the telecom giant after they started receiving payments from a $100 million settlement pool.
Chiefs is paying out after settling claims it misled its customers between 2016 and 2023.
The payments were reserved for those using Verizon and previous account holders.
Verizon was accused of not disclosing fees for its wireless service plans.
The Chiefs did not admit any wrongdoing but agreed to pay.
The maximum payment was $100, but the Americans were outraged by what they received.
One recipient shared a screenshot that revealed she had received a payment.
She received only $3.85, according to an X post.
“I need to see right documents,” she shuddered.
“You guys have me cracking up.”
She insisted that the company could have kept the money.
The social media user isn’t the only customer to have their payment bounced.
“Thanks for the $5.63 from the settlement,” said another.
“I just got my Verizon settlement, please knock me off,” said a third user.
Customers have received varying amounts, according to screenshots shared on X.
Some pocketed $14.81, while others received a paltry $3.55.
What is a class action?
Class actions offer groups of people, or ‘classes’, a way to join together in court.
These lawsuits are often brought by one or a few individuals who claim that a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a lawsuit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar grievances to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class-action lawsuits—offering payment to class members, who typically waive their right to pursue additional lawsuits by accepting money.
These payout agreements often include statements from the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class action lawsuits to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are just a few examples of what can land a class action lawsuit on a company’s doorstep.
“This Verizon settlement made me rich,” one user scoffed.
The deadline for filing claims was April 2024 and payments are being made on a rolling basis.
It is believed that the maximum payment was $100.
Americans could either receive their check by mail or electronically.
However, they were warned that the payments could be lower depending on the volume of claims submitted.
Meanwhile, The US Sun has reported how Americans can claim payments of up to $7,000 from a data breach settlement.
The pot is worth $6.8 million and is related to claims that Tampa General Hospital is settling.
