USPS mail delivery services will close Thursday to commemorate the late former President Carter

The United States Postal Service (USPS) suspended its regular mail delivery and retail services on Thursday in conjunction with a national day of mourning for the late former President Jimmy Carter. Limited package delivery services will still be available.

Normal operations will resume Friday, including retail, delivery and pickup schedules.

The USPS said customers will still be able to buy stamps at most grocery, drug and convenience stores.

Postal products and services are always available onlinewhere customers can track packages, buy stamps, hold mail, schedule a package pick-up and much more.

Carter died on December 29 after being in hospice nearly two years earlier.

The 39th president had most recently celebrated his 100th birthday in October.

Carter’s remains have been lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda this week ahead of his funeral Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral.

All living presidents are invited, and Joe Biden will give a tribute. Biden also signed a bill to name a USPS facility in Plains — Carter’s hometown — after Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

The Carter family will then return to bury their patriarch in Plains after a private hometown funeral at 1 p.m. 3:45 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter, a devout evangelical, taught Sunday school for decades.

Carter will be buried afterwards in a private graveside service in a plot visible from the front porch of his home.
