Netflix fans gripped by ‘best true crime series in years’ as it soars up the charts – raving ‘I’ve binged every episode!’

Netflix fans have become obsessed with a new show soaring up the charts, with some enthusing they’ve already ‘binged every episode’.

The true crime series hit the platform this week and is in Swedish – but that didn’t stop viewers around the world from getting hooked.

Subscribers can’t help but watch The Breakthrough, a four-part dramatization of the second largest investigation in the Scandinavian country’s history.

159 minutes long, the series focused on a double murder that took place in the city of Linköping in 2004.

It starred Peter Eggers as police officer John Sudin and Mattias Nordkvist as genealogist Per, as the duo team up to catch the killer before it becomes a cold case.

And fans raved about the tense true crime show in the days following its premiere.

Jane wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: ‘This is one of the best true crime things I’ve seen in years. No crazy plot. Just real people, a technology that (in its early stages) has been with us for years.

‘And then there is a breakthrough. Ideally, the series would have been longer and explained more about the killer’s background. But it’s good. Very good.’

Meanwhile, Andrew added: ‘Excellent fast moving and well produced show based on a true story. Top class acting. Beautiful musical score. The story is fascinating. Binged watched the 4 episodes.’

An X user wrote: ‘Breakthrough on Netflix – 4 episodes 40 minutes each excellent.’

Netflix promoted the series with the description: ‘The Breakthrough is a fictional story about the unexpected hero, an unlikely collaboration and the hunt for a killer. But it is also a story about how an unsolved crime affects a society and what happens to people who are left without answers to both “who and why?”.

The show focused on the murders of an eight-year-old boy and the woman who stumbled upon the crime scene.

The genealogy used to investigate the murders marked the first time in Europe that a case had been solved in this way.

Netflix fans are still spoiled for choice when it comes to true crime, especially after ‘horrifying yet brilliant’ series The Walk-In landed on the streamer last month.

Originally broadcast on ITV in 2022, it is a five-part series which tells the true story of how a group of activists infiltrated the far-right terrorist group National Action – who were responsible for the murder of MP Jo Cox.

Line Of Duty star Stephen Graham, 51, plays Matthew Collins, a former member of several fascist and neo-Nazi groups who later became an activist for anti-fascist and anti-racist campaigns, including Hope Not Hate.

The show follows Matthew as he goes undercover to thwart a plot by National Action member Jack Renshaw, played by Dean-Charles Chapman, to assassinate Labor MP Rosie Cooper in 2017.

Convicted child offender, terrorist and former National Action spokesman Jack was jailed for life for his plan to kill Rosie.

As a former member of National Action, Matthew was able to remain unsuspecting as he passed information about the plot back to advocacy group Hope Not Hate.

Those looking for a cozier watch might turn to the recently added comedy Younger, after the beloved series was added to Netflix a decade after it first aired.

The show, created by Darren Star and starring Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar, Nico Tortorella and Miriam Shor, ran for seven seasons.

It follows 40-year-old single Liza Miller (Sutton) who has a run-in with tattoo artist Josh (Nico), who is under the impression that they are both in their 20s.

Not wanting to let him down, she decides to reinvent herself and goes back to her career in publishing, pretending to be a 20-year-old.

Now all seven series of the hit show are available to stream on Netflix, and fans will no doubt be delighted as the show holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with seasons two through six having an absolutely perfect score.
