Ed Reed joins the Atlanta area’s Chamblee High School as the football team’s offensive coordinator

Ed Reed spent a distinguished football career terrorizing opposing offenses as a Hall of Fame safety for the Baltimore Ravens.

Now he switches sides. Chamblee High School near Atlanta announced Monday that it had hired Reed to its football coaching staff — as its offensive coordinator. Reed confirmed the news on social media.

Reed is the second former Raven to join the staff at Chamblee. His former teammate is running back Jamal Lewis joined Chamblee in 2024 as its director of college recruiting.

Reed’s son Edward Reed III plays at Chamblee as a defensive back and wide receiver. Which all explains Reed’s connection to the high school. But why offensive coordinator?

Reed developed into a Hall of Famer in part by astutely diagnosing opposing offenses en route to 64 career interceptions, the seventh-most in NFL history. Now he will look to translate that ability to develop and call offensive plays for Chamblee.

Reed’s post-playing career

This is not Reed’s first coaching stint since retiring from the NFL after the 2013 season. In 2016, Reed joined head coach Rex Ryan’s staff as the defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills. Reed did not remain with the Bills the following season after they fired Ryan.

In 2020, Reed joined his alma mater Miami in an administrative role as chief of staff to then-head coach Manny Diaz. He remained on the job until 2022, when HBCU Bethune-Cookman announced it had hired Reed as its football coach.

But the job never materialized. Weeks after the news of his hiring, Reed announced that the two sides never reached a contract agreement and that he would not be coaching the program. Reed made the announcement after complaints on social media about the program and its facilities.

Now, Reed returns to the sidelines, where he will take on a new role while coaching his son.
