Kansas City Chiefs Divisional Playoff game brings cold temperatures

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Gameday gear should include multiple layers and hand warmers for Chiefs fans attending Saturday’s AFC Divisional game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The KCTV5 First Warn Weather Team is expecting a wild ride off the field over the next 24 hours.

FRIDAY

Friday afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the high 40s across the Kansas City metro.

Temperatures will slide almost 30 degrees at kickoff on Saturday afternoon.

SATURDAY

Two cold fronts are moving toward Kansas City, bringing cloud cover, higher winds, significantly colder conditions and the possibility of freezing precipitation.

OVERNIGHT

A new cold front will develop out of the northwest and head south.

It will continue to lead through heavy cloud cover but still build moisture from the south, allowing for a few isolated storms to the north that make landfall in the metro.

This thunderstorm opportunity is very weak and is not expected to result in any significant accumulation that should alter your outdoor plans, whether it’s an early morning prep with the smoker or getting the RV ready for the drive over to Arrowhead.

NECKLACE

Temperatures will have already dropped as low as 23° as Chiefs fans line up to wait for the car park gates to open.

This will be the high for the day as temperatures are expected to drop through the afternoon and evening.

The front itself is expected to linger just south of Interstate-70 and sweep across the region from west to east.

This allows just enough time for snowfall to rebuild and transfer from central Kansas to our area. Light showers or dust are expected to accumulate south of the interstate loop, but a few flakes flying into the center and toward the Arrowhead are possible between 9 and 12

Again, we don’t expect any kind of significant accumulation to change your outdoor plans, but the cold air and strong winds will cause problems.

KICKOFF

Temperatures are expected to be between 17° and 21° throughout the duration of the game.

Gusts between 20 mph and 25 mph will be common. Not only can the wind affect the kicking game, it will also make it feel even colder. Fans should dress accordingly so the temperature feels like 5° to 10° throughout the game.

Sustained winds primarily out of the northwest will vary between 10 mph and 15 mph throughout the afternoon and early evening.
