Dare to interview Tennessee State Head Coach Eddie George at Halas Hall

Earlier tonight on the Washington vs Detroit postgame studio show on FOX, Jay Glazer reported that the Chicago Bears plan to interview Eddie George on Sunday morning for their head coaching vacancy.

George, four times Pro Bowl running back in the NFL, has been the head coach at Tennessee State for the past four years. During his time with the Tigers, he has a 24-22 record and was recently named OVC-Big South Football Association Coach of the Year while leading his team to a 9-4 record and a share of the conference championship .

If you’re wondering about a Bears connection to George, in 2023 George was one of two coaches who spent part of the offseason at Halas Hall, working with the Chicago staff as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

It was not reported whether George’s interview would be virtual or in person, an important distinction because of the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview two minority candidates in person before hiring a head coach. The Bears have already met with Ron Rivera in person, and since Rivera is of Puerto Rican, Mexican and Filipino descent, the Bears would need another qualified candidate to meet the rule.

With Detroit Lions by losing tonight, their two coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, who have already virtually met with the Bears, will be able to interview teams in person this coming week.

UPDATE: On Sunday morning it was reported that the meeting would take place in Halas Hall.
