The cold weather has already prompted the postponement of Jacksonville’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade and the move to indoors for President Donald Trumps initiation. Don’t expect it to go away anytime soon.

With a freeze warning in effect overnight Monday, the National Weather Service in Jacksonville has “high confidence for an extended period of dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills from evening into Thursday. Overnight freezes and dangerous wind chills will remain through Saturday,” the city advised in the update Monday afternoon.

Western Duval County is under a winter storm warning with freezing rain likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The areas most at risk for freezing rain are those west of the Interstate 295 West Beltway, the city said.

Some parts of Florida may even see snow, according to meteorologists. Roads, trees and power lines are a concern, as are plants, pets and people who are elderly or outdoors.

The weather service announced that its winter storm watch has been upgraded to a warning for all of southeast Georgia and part of interior northeast Florida.

  • Frost warning until 10 Tuesday. Early morning wind chill in the low 20s with highs in the 40s. Morning wind chill in the low to mid 20s through the week.

  • Winter Storm Warning Tuesday late afternoon-early Wednesday afternoon. Moderate to high chance of freezing rain.

  • Snow and wintry mix (freezing rain and/or sleet) medium chance inside southeast Georgia.

  • Night will freeze inland through the coming weekend.

“A rare and potentially impactful winter weather event remains on track Tuesday evening through midday Wednesday for southeast Georgia and parts of northeast Florida,” the weather service said. “Model trends consistently increase the potential for snow and freezing rain over the last few days, with models also becoming more consistent with each other on impacts.”

Some Florida school districts have opted to close due to the cold, but locally the Times-Union has not received any notifications.

The locally based Weather Service office covering Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia is not listing Jacksonville for snow.

It states: “The current forecast has the highest chances of measurable snow (40-65% chance of 1-inch accumulation) from the line Statenville to Waycross to Darien, Ga., northward. For areas south of there, but along and north of I -10 there is a medium (40-60%) chance of freezing rain accumulation greater than 0.1 inch and a low (20-30%) chance of ice accumulations when 0.25.”

Has it snowed in Jacksonville?

Any snow or ice accumulation would be Jacksonville’s first in 35 years, since a pre-Christmas storm dropped nearly 2 inches of snow on much of Northeast Florida on Dec. 23, 1989.

Temperatures are expected to be below normal but not as cold across the Florida peninsula

No later than Tuesday coldest temperatures will be mainly concentrated along the Panhandle. South Florida will have highs in the mid-70s, Central Florida in the low-50s and North Florida in the 40s, while cities like Pensacola, Tallahassee and everything in between will be in the 30s Tuesday afternoon, according to Florida Public radio emergency network.

The temperatures will be especially after Wednesday below average for most of Florida. By the end of the week, up to 25 below average across the Panhandle and North Florida, while central and southern Florida will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal. according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.

How to prepare for a cold in Florida

  • Persons are encouraged to stay indoorsuntil conditions improve

  • Dress in layers including hat, face mask and gloves if you are going out.

  • Consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution. Consider taking one winter storm kit with you, including things like tire chains, utility cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing. Also take water, a first aid kit and anything else that will help you survive if you get stranded.

  • To prevent water pipes from freezing; pack or drain or let them drip slowly.

  • Make frequent checks on elderly family, friends and neighbors.

  • Make sure portable heaters are used properly.

  • Do not use generators or grills inside.

  • Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
