Alabama schools close, delay Jan. 21 and 22 ahead of winter weather, snow

In anticipation of severe winter weather and snow coming to Alabama, including the Gulf Coast, several school systems have announced changes to their schedules for this week.

The National Weather Service said a “significant” winter storm becomes more likely for south Alabama on Tuesday.

Extreme cold temperatures have settled over most of the state. Winter storm warnings go into effect Tuesday. Precipitation — snow, sleet, freezing rain or a wintry mix — will begin in southwest Alabama Tuesday morning and continue throughout the day, moving east.

However, it is still unclear how much snow can be expected. Transport will still be dangerous and forecasters warn that roads could be icy until Wednesday.

See the list of school closings, changes and delays below. Most schools will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

This list will be updated as more information becomes available.
