Guy Martin is looking for a “proper job” with U&Dave Guy Martin is looking for a “proper job” with U&Dave

UKTV treat yourself to some work experience…

Guy Martin never wanted to work in HR or be an IT consultant… and he is certainly not interested in the kind of career where there will be brainstorming in the blue sky in the collaboration area. In a four-part series for U&Dave, Guy tries different vocations.

“I don’t make TV programs for the sake of making TV programs. Absolutely not. Because I have a job, you know what I mean? I don’t have to do that. We don’t have some rock and roll lifestyle to maintain – well, when you say that – I bought Shazza a ride-on lawnmower. It’s probably the only rock and roll I’ve ever done! I bought my wife a riding lawnmower! We’re not flashmates, so I don’t have to do it for the lifestyle, you know? We are boring. Well, not boring, I do interesting things all the time, but we’re not flash.”Guy Martin on whether working for UKTV is a ‘real job’

In the first episode, which airs next week, cameras follow Guy as he embarks on one of the most intense experiences of his life as he takes on what is often called the most dangerous job in Britain – working as a deckhand on a fishing trawler. Not a single trawler still operates from Guy’s hometown of Grimsby, one of the country’s biggest fishing ports when Guy was growing up. So Guy has to travel to another famous trawler town, Brixham, in Devon. Here he sets sail for a grueling 4-day trip on a 30-foot boom trawler called the William of Ladram.

Other episodes in the series see Guy join the Wildlife Wardens as they carry out their conservation work, attempting bird-watching, rat-catching and cleaning up a beach favored by pregnant seals on a remote island in the Irish Sea, right next to coast of the Isle of Man. He also follows in the footsteps of his brother and sister, who were both firefighters, when he joins Peak’s Lane Fire Station in Grimsby – the town’s busiest station – to work a full day on Green Watch.

Finally, he joins a search and rescue team as a dog handler in the Scottish Highlands. It’s cold, wet and gale-force – but of course it involves a dog, so Guy loves it.

Guy Martin:

“I’ve just always been fascinated by people who are masters of their craft, especially when they’re doing it, so it’s an honor to work with some really interesting people and find out a bit more about the hows and whys they do. There are a lot of jobs that I’ve always wanted to try, and if an opportunity comes to hang around and learn from proper experts and grafters, sign me up.”
