Kalamazoo Public Schools will hold three safety and security meetings starting Tuesday | WKZO | Everything Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools has already taken steps to harden school buildings, with secure entrances, camera surveillance and officials are now considering metal detectors.

They already use them at sporting events.

Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade says it would make the schools safer if they were also installed at the entrances to the high schools and middle schools.

It’s one of the topics scheduled for safety and security meetings he has scheduled with the community.

“We’re proposing to add an extra layer of security, but we wanted to discuss this with the community first, so we’re having three meetings,” says Slade.

The first will be held on Tuesday evening at Loy Norrix Gymnasium.

“We want to talk about safety and security, but we would also roll out the ability to have gun detectors in our schools.”

The second session is scheduled for next Tuesday the 28th at Maple Street Middle School and the third will be February 10th at Kalamazoo Central High School.

All sessions start at 18.00

We originally reported that the first meeting was set for Monday. We have corrected the story to indicate that it will be at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 21 at Loy Norrix High School. We apologize for the error.
