NJ Transit strike looms after union rejects second federal panel’s recommendations

Another Presidential Emergency Board sided with NJ Transit on the sticky issue of locomotive engineer wages, setting the stage for a showdown in 60 days that could result in a rail strike.

NJ Transit officials announced that Presidential Emergency Board 352 issued a final report that said the agency’s “final offer” to the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union was the “most reasonable.” NJ Transit and the union have been deadlocked in negotiations over a new contract.

When that report becomes publicly available on Wednesday, it will start a 60-day clock that could result in a rail strike on March 22 if a new deal is not reached. The union has the option to strike or NJ Transit can lock out union members after that date.
