NEW DELHI: Young Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh made history on Wednesday, becoming the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is during the opening match of the five-match series against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The left-arm pacer surpassed leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to achieve this remarkable feat, further cementing his position as a vital cog in India’s T20I set-up.

Arshdeep now holds the record of 97 wickets in just 61 matches, showing his incredible strike rate and consistency at international level.

Arshdeep, who entered the competition with 95 wickets to his name, dismissed England opener Philip Salt (0) and Ben Duckett (4) in his first two overs to reach the milestone.
Most wickets for India in T20Is

Chahal, who previously held the record with 96 wickets in 80 matches, now occupies the second spot. He remains one of India’s finest spinners in the shortest format, but Arshdeep’s rapid rise to the top reflects his ability to deliver impactful performances under pressure.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is third on the list with 90 wickets from 87 matches. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya follow close behind, tied on 89 wickets, with Bumrah achieving the mark in just 70 matches compared to Hardik’s 110 appearances.
Arshdeep’s journey has been a revelation for Indian cricket. Known for his accurate yorkers and ability to bowl in the death overs, he has become a go-to bowler for the team in crunch situations.
With India’s T20 side in transition, Arshdeep’s consistency provides stability to the bowling line-up.
Arshdeep, who finished as the joint top wicket-taker in the 2024 T20 World Cup, has also made India’s ODI squad for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy.
