The Toronto Blue Jays’ management team has come up short in recent weeks, but appears to be connected and very interested in two-time World Series champion pitcher Max Scherzer.

#BlueJays have expressed interest in free-agent RHP Max Scherzer, per @bnicholsonsmith

Their interest has intensified as general manager Ross Atkins has been unable to attract several prominent names from the free agent pool, and it appears the Blue Jays are turning to the veteran pitcher to potentially make the roster.

Scherzer would help the Blue Jays rotate in 2025

The 17-year veteran didn’t have a strong season last year after returning to the big leagues after undergoing back surgery last season. Scherzer has logged a lot of innings in his storied career, but would be a great veteran to add to the roster as he knows how to win.

Scherzer underwent back surgery last season and was expected to miss at least some time at the start of the 2024 campaign while he recovered, but subsequent issues with nerve irritation in his triceps, shoulder fatigue and a hamstring strain resulted in what was pretty close to a lost season for both Scherzer and the Rangers as a whole. – Mark Polishuk MLB Trade Rumors

Over the past few years, Scherzer has always been linked to his former teammate in Justin Verlander, who just signed with the San Francisco Giants two weeks ago on a one-year, $15 million deal.

This now puts Scherzer front and center for veteran pitchers remaining on the free agent market.

The Blue Jays have signed a pair of pitchers for help this offseason

This offseason has been underwhelming to say the least even with the Blue Jays
signing former draft pick Jeff Hoffman and Yimi Garcia. The Jays have always been in the mix or the front runner to land players this offseason, which includes Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes and was a finalist with Roki Sasaki, who became a Los Angeles Dodger a few days ago.

While Scherzer may feel like a consolation prize given all the talent the Jays missed out on, he’s still a good pitcher with veteran and managerial pedigree that the Blue Jays could use and also provide some innings and starts that would help the rotation .

“As currently constructed, the Blue Jays may be a tougher sell for” Scherzer, writes Nicholson-Smith, who while Scherzer’s market may be somewhat limited by his age and recent injuries, would surely still prefer to play for a struggling team , if he has options. Ben Nicholson-Smith Sportsnet

It could be a tough sell for the Blue Jays at the moment, as the roster construction doesn’t appear to be ideal for many up-and-coming players. But it remains to be seen whether the deal can be completed as the Blue Jays can continue to find help in the offseason.
