The USMNT passed their first test of 2025 with ease, dispatching Venezuela 3-1 behind goals from Jack McGlynn, Patrick Agyemang and Matko Miljevic. All three scored their first international goals, while eight players earned their first senior caps at Inter Miami CF’s Chase Stadium.

Nineteen MLS players feature on Mauricio Pochettino’s roster, giving the Argentine manager an expanded look at the league’s talent pool ahead of the Concacaf Nations League Finals and Concacaf Gold Cup later this year. It all leads up to the FIFA 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.

Pochettino’s MLS-heavy side provided several moments of promise against an equally young Venezuela side with less prominent international players as head coach Fernando Batista looks to qualify La Vintotino for their first ever FIFA World Cup.

The USA, on the other hand, has already secured a place in next year’s competition as co-host of the tournament.

However, most players on the current USMNT roster are looking to break into the national team picture and stay on Pochettino’s radar.

McGlynn and Agyemang may have helped their cases the most. The Philadelphia Union’s homegrown midfielder opened the game against Venezuela with a stunning long-range shot from nearly 30 yards, while the Charlotte FC forward marked his USMNT debut with a goal that proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Wednesday’s friendly will serve as the debut for Costa Rica’s new head coach Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera.

The famed Mexican manager, who has been linked to MLS numerous times over the years, replaced the departing Gustavo Alfaro earlier this month as Los Ticos prepare for the third round of Concacaf World Cup qualifiers beginning in September.

Herrera’s 24-man roster is made up entirely of players based in Liga FPD, Costa Rica’s first division.
