Looking at candidates the Jaguars could target to replace GM Trent Baalke

The Jaguars fired general manager Trent Baalke on Wednesday, a little more than two weeks after they fired head coach Doug Pederson. News4JAX takes a look at some of the top candidates to replace Baalke.

1. Louis Riddick, ESPN analyst and former NFL front office executive

Louis Riddick has built a reputation as one of the most respected voices in the NFL. Before transitioning to a successful career as an ESPN analyst, Riddick worked in NFL front offices as the director of pro personnel for both the Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia Eagles. His expertise in roster construction, player evaluation and organizational management have made him a sought-after candidate for general manager positions.

Riddick’s analytical approach to team building and his ability to articulate a clear, long-term vision make him an exciting candidate for Jacksonville. With Trevor Lawrence at the helm, the Jaguars need a GM who can maximize their young talent and build a sustainable winner. Riddick’s experience and sharp football mind would bring a fresh perspective to the Jaguars’ front office.

2. Mike Greenberg, Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager

Mike Greenberg enters his 15th season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and second as the team’s assistant general manager. Prior to his promotion, Greenberg served two seasons as the Buccaneers’ vice president of football administration. Then followed eight years as director of football administration and two as coordinator of football administration. He originally joined the Buccaneers in 2010 as a player personnel assistant and has steadily climbed the ranks of the organization.

Known for his expertise in salary cap management, contract negotiations and strategic planning, Greenberg was instrumental in helping the Buccaneers assemble their Super Bowl-winning roster in 2020. For the Jaguars, Greenberg’s proven ability to manage a team’s financial health while built a competitive team. list would be invaluable.

3. Ray Agnew, Detroit Lions assistant general manager

Agnew is one of the NFL’s fastest-rising executives. A former NFL player, Agnew transitioned to front-office work with the Los Angeles Rams before joining the Detroit Lions as assistant general manager. Along with GM Brad Holmes, Agnew has played a key role in the Lions’ resurgence, helping the team build a competitive roster and establish a winning culture.

For the Jaguars, Agnew’s ability to help turn a struggling franchise into a playoff contender is especially appealing. His player-first approach and emphasis on culture-building could help Jacksonville take the next step in its development.

4. Will McClay, Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel

McClay has been a cornerstone of the Dallas Cowboys’ front office for nearly a decade. As the team’s vice president of player personnel, McClay has overseen the Cowboys’ scouting and draft efforts and has helped build one of the NFL’s most talented rosters. His eye for talent and ability to identify impact players in the draft have been instrumental in Dallas’ success.

McClay’s expertise in player evaluation and roster construction makes him an ideal candidate for Jacksonville. The Jaguars are still building their identity as a team, and McClay’s ability to find talent that fits specific schemes could help them solidify their roster. His experience working in a high-pressure organization like Dallas also positions him well to handle the expectations of turning the Jaguars into a consistent playoff team.

Internal option: Ethan Waugh, Jaguars interim general manager

Waugh is currently named the Jaguars’ interim general manager, he was hired as the team’s assistant general manager on May 18, 2022. Waugh most recently served as the vice president of player personnel (2021-22) with the 49ers after three seasons as the director of college scouting and football systems for the team.

Having spent nearly two years with Jacksonville, Waugh already understands the organization’s goals and culture, giving him a unique advantage over outside candidates. If Waugh can demonstrate his leadership skills during his interim tenure, he could strengthen his case to be the Jaguars’ long-term GM.
