Former Patriots assistant gets new job in AFC

Coaching turnover is in full swing at the New England Patriots as new head coach Mike Vrabel quickly assembles his staff.

Josh McDaniels and Terrell Williams are offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, respectively, while most members of Jerod Mayo’s old staff are looking for new jobs.

It looks like former Patriots defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery found someone like The Athletics Paul Dehner Jr. reported Wednesday that Montgomery takes on the same role with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Montgomery is not the first Patriots coach from last season to quit with the Bengals this offseason. Montgomery will make the trip from New England to Cincinnati with offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant offensive line coach Michael McCarthy.

Montgomery’s lone season with the Patriots after spending nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers was not successful. New England ranked last in the NFL in sacks with 28, while also allowing the 10th most rushing yards per game at 131.4.

Vrabel will now be tasked with filling that spot on New England’s staff. It will be the Patriots’ third coach in that position in as many years, since DeMarcus Covington held that role for four seasons before being promoted to defensive coordinator. Covington is not expected to return to the Patriots.
