HALF TIME SCORES

The whistle blows in the first 45 minutes and Mohamed Salah’s goal has put Liverpool on the brink of automatic qualification.

Salah has been directly involved in 39 goals in 31 games for Liverpool this season (22 goals, 17 assists); most by any player for a club in Europe’s big five leagues.

Elsewhere in Europe, ex-retired Wojciech Szczesny is putting on a horror show for Barcelona.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper made another mistake at Benfica when he conceded a penalty before the break.

Vangelis Pavlidis completed his hat-trick from the spot and Barca are in for disappointment.

The Catalans’ La Liga rivals Atletico are also up against it after seeing Pablo Barrios sent off for a foul on Nordi Mukiele.

And it’s Mukiele who puts in the cross that leads to the opener for Xabi Alonso’s side – with Piero Hincapie heading home before the break.

  • Atletico Madrid 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen
  • Bologna 0-1 Borussia Dortmund
  • Club Brugge 0-0 Juventus
  • Crvena Zvezda 0-3 PSV Eindhoven
  • Liverpool 1-0 LOSC Lille
  • Slovan Bratislava 0-2 Stuttgart
  • Benfica 3-1 Barcelona

Salah then came close to a second

Liverpool 1-0 Lille

Mohamed Salah is inches away from doubling his total and his side’s lead as he is found in acres of space down the right.

The Egyptian uses his body brilliantly to shield the ball from a recovering defender before opening his body for the shot.

The angle is towards Salah and his attempt to side-foot a finish into the far corner oozes agonizingly wide of the far post.

That would have given Liverpool daylight!

GOAL!! Liverpool 1-0 Little Mohamed Salah

WHO ELSE?!

Liverpool’s Egyptian king opens the scoring at Anfield and the home side finally got the breakthrough they were looking for.

It’s Salah’s 50th European goal for Liverpool – he just keeps breaking records!

The visitors want a foul after Kostas Tsimikas nibbles to dislodge Jonathan David, but the referee sees nothing.

Curtis Jones takes over and spots Salah’s runs in behind, finding the Liverpool talisman with unerring accuracy.

Salah then does the rest – a wonderful curling first-time finish into the far corner to send Anfield into jubilation.

Salah has scored 20 goals for Liverpool at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League – the only players to score more goals at a particular venue for an English team in the competition are Sergio Agüero at the Etihad (23) and Ruud van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford ( 23 ).

Liverpool are fighting

Liverpool 0-0 Lille

Liverpool have attempted just one shot so far – their joint fewest in the first 20 minutes of a UEFA Champions League game this season (also one against RB Leipzig in October).

Luis Díaz has won possession five times so far.

It is already his most in a single UEFA Champions League game since October 2022 (6 against Rangers).

Pavlidis at the double

Benfica 2-1 Barcelona

WHAT A REACTION FROM THE WEBSITE!

It’s a terrible mistake from former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, who only ended his retirement to play for Barca.

He comes rushing out of his goal in an attempt to clear a hopeful ball over the top, but only manages to collide with his own man.

Szczęsny crashes into Alejandro Balde 60 yards from his goal and the pair both fall to the floor.

The loose ball falls kindly to Pavlidis, who has the simplest job of taking a touch off his feet before rolling it into an empty goal.
