CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – School districts in both North and South Carolina adjusted their schedules for Wednesday due to winter weather.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in place for the entire Charlotte area – in both North and South Carolina – until the morning of Wednesday, January 22nd. Cool temperatures were expected – especially further west in North Carolina, where an extreme cold warning was in place until Wednesday afternoon.

Some schools in the area canceled or delayed classes until Wednesday.

Significantly low temperatures were forecast throughout the region from Tuesday night to Wednesday. Low temperatures will likely reach the single digits in the mountains and north of I-40, while areas south of I-40 — including the Charlotte Metro area — could see lows in the teens, according to our First Alert meteorologists.

Snow was also possible across the Carolinas Tuesday into Wednesday, with any accumulation expected to freeze.

Communities in the southern and eastern Piedmont, and part of the northern Coastal Plain, were expected to receive 1-2 inches of snow by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Some areas that have already seen precipitation, such as western North Carolina, already had snow and ice-covered roads amid sub-freezing temperatures Tuesday.
