Sebastian Stan and ‘I’m Still Here’ Get Unexpected Nods, Selena Gomez Shut Out

At long last, the Oscar nominations in 2025 are here – and there are a number of snubs and surprises in the field.

Some people have expressed concern about going ahead with the Oscars after wildfires devastated parts of Los Angeles. After a few delays in announcing the nominations, the show is scheduled to go ahead and air on March 2.

Emilia Perez leads the pack with 13 nominations despite his burgeoning reputation as the villain this awards season. Evil and The Brutalist is close behind with 10 nods.

Selena Gomez

The trio of core actresses from Emilia Perez was often nominated for awards this season, but this time Gomez missed out on a nod for her supporting role. Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña were both recognized by the academy’s voters.

Challengers and Queer

Both of director Luca Guadagnino’s eligible films were shut out of the Oscars.

Winning a Golden Globe didn’t generate enough buzz to get Challengers a nomination for Best Score, and Daniel Craig missed out on an expected Best Actor nomination for Queer.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Although she has already garnered several nominations for her emotionally complex lead role in Hard truthsshe was rejected by the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Angelina Jolie

Considered a front-runner by many for her performance as the title character in Mary, she was not among those nominated this time for Best Actress.

A real pain

Although Kieran Culkin dominates the Best Supporting Actor race this season, and actor-director Jesse Eisenberg received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, the film itself was not nominated for Best Picture.

Nickel boys

The unique POV style of filming used in the Nickel boys it didn’t get a cinematography nomination, though it’s a welcome surprise to see it get a Best Picture nod.

Jon M. Chu

Though Evil got an impressive 10 nods in total, its director was not even nominated.

Surprises

The fabric

Although the film has been part of awards talks throughout, it’s still surprising to see a campy horror film receive five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Coralie Fargeat and Best Actress for Demi Moore.

Nosferatu

As with the substance, it’s unexpected to see a horror film win so many awards – but Nosferatu hasn’t been considered a contender so much as The fabric hair. Its four nominations for production design, cinematography, costume design and makeup and hairstyling come as a huge shock.

Monica Barbaro

A complete unknown has picked up steam over the past few months, and a Best Supporting Actress nod for Barbaro cements the Academy’s love for the film.

Sebastian Stan

The actor earned a double nomination at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in both categories – but he won for the comedy A different man. At the Oscars, he has just been nominated for portraying Donald Trump in The apprentice.

I’m still here

Fernanda Torres won a Golden Globe for her performance in the Brazilian drama, but it’s striking to see the film nominated for Best Picture.
