When Junior Hockey returns to St. John’s for the fall, the team that takes the ice will serve as a greeting to the province’s military history.

Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League calls the team the Newfoundland Regiment – with its name, logo and colors, all inspiration from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the province’s legendary infantry unit from the World War II.

“The name Newfoundland Regiment not only pays tribute to the incredible inheritance that these brave soldiers have left behind, but also incarnate the values against, unity and resilience. These qualities continue to be expelled by the men and women in the modern Royal Newfoundland Regiment,” Glen Glen Stanford, the team’s team President, wrote in a press release.

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment is remembered for their victims in World War I and is among the oldest regiments in Canada. The unit fought in Galipoli and at Beaumont-Hamel, where it experienced devastating losses.

Of the 780 men who made the advance against German lines on July 1, 1916 at Beaumont-Hamel, only 68 were able to answer name calls the following day.

The regiment also had ties to hockey before their introduction in QMJHL. Soldiers posted in Pleasantville formed a hockey team in 1917 while waiting for transport to England, playing exhibition matches against teams from the Canadian mainland.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey, who unveiled the name of a crowd of young fans, stakeholders and former QMJHL players from Newfoundland and Labrador, praised the name for its celebration of the regiment’s inheritance, reluctance and sacrifice.

“The team’s name is taken from a proud side of this story about our place we call home. It celebrates who we are. It is celebrating what we are able to do,” Furey said, adding that the team’s players, coaches And staff have a responsibility to protect this inheritance.

“Deal to be called the Newfoundland Regiment. Embrace that fighting spirit, and use it to be more inspiring … because you carry a name written in all our hearts.”

St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen – If Uncle in the Regiment – said he appreciates the team’s greeting and is eager to welcome them to Mary Brown’s center.

“When they see that uniform and they see that logo, they will remember our younger generation, which gave up so much for what we have today,” Breen said.

The team’s logo has the same prominent Woodland Caribou as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and is partially colored “Puttee Blue” – citing Blue Puttes, the first 500 members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment – according to a press release from the team.
