Robert Saleh could be on his way back to San Francisco.

According to Matt Barrows, Michael Silver and Zack Rosenblatt from The Athletic is Saleh “expected to return To Niners as a defensive coordinator, a position he held between the 2017-20 seasons.

It comes in the wake of Liam Coen showing up as a favorite to land the main coach concert in Jacksonville. Saleh interviewed for that position last week and was scheduled to have another interview scheduled this week, but it looks like the hunting will take Coen.

It is still possible that he can take a head-coaching performance, but Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints still have vacancies:

Saleh, 45, spent the last four seasons as head coach of the New York Jets by 20-36, although he was bleeding with poor quarterback games in his first three seasons and was fired only five games in the 2024 season when he finally had A Healthy Aaron Rodgers (Jets went 3-9 with Jeff Ulbrich as a temporary head coach).

As a defensive coordinator or head coach, his defense has completed the top-10 in allowed yards five times, top-10 in allowed points twice and top-10 in takeaways twice.

Niners meanwhile was saddle with damage to both sides of the ball in 2024, but finished in 29th place in allowed points (25.6 ppg) and eighth in allowed yards (317.4 ypg).

After a disappointing 6-11 season, Niners made a number of changes in the coaching staff under Kyle Shanahan, including degrading defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. However, they can keep him in San Francisco in another role.

“Still trying to hope to keep him on board in another trait because he is a guy I don’t want to lose,” Shanahan told journalists after the degradation was announced. “But just where we are, as a team where I think we are going, there are many big decisions ahead for us.”

If Saleh is hired, he would be the team’s third offensive coordinator in as many seasons after Steve Wilks was fired after the campaign in 2023. Niners has not been nearly as formidable defensively in recent seasons as they were under Saleh and his replacement , Demeco Ryans, who spent two seasons as defensive coordinator (2021-22) before becoming head coach of Houston Texans.

Veteran Linebacker Fred Warner told journalists After the season, some of that responsibility falls on the players.

“The easy thing right now is that everyone is going to blame (Sørensen) for how the defense has played, and when you are the guy at the helm, that’s what happens,” he said. “You’re going to take the majority of it but it’s all. Everyone has to take a look in the mirror. I have to take a look in the mirror … I think Nick has done a fantastic piece Work all as players when we have to perform and play the game, we gave him no services.

Saleh will hope they will make him a few services next season if he returns to the team.
