Philip Broberg was down for the Blues’ training today

The Blues’ defensive injury bug continues this season and Philip Broberg is the latest victim. Broberg fell in training today, according to Jeremy Rutherford of the Athletic. Rutherford said Broberg fell on his right leg and had to be helped off the ice with no weight on that leg.

Jim Montgomery said Broberg is being evaluated and there will be an update tomorrow. That’s all we know at this point. Hopefully, it’s something that won’t keep the young defender out long-term.

Broberg has already struggled with his right leg this season, missing 12 games after injuring it against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 2. His point production has slowed since this injury, but he has still played very well up to this point.

What does this mean for the Blues going forward?

Because right now we obviously don’t know. If this injury is something that keeps him out long term, it will be a problem. The defense has been playing extremely well lately. Taking Broberg out of the equation most likely means Ryan Suter and Justin Faulk will be upgraded to the second pairing.

I give credit where credit is due. Ryan Suter was playing very solid hockey for the Blues before the trade for Cam Fowler. Suter was Parayko’s most consistent partner up top and the duo looked good at times. However, Justin Faulk hasn’t looked great all season. He’s probably a second-pairing fringe defender at best, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him playing there for an extended period of time.

If Broberg is out for the long term, it will make the playoffs more in doubt. Can this group of defenders play well enough. Do I believe they can have the same kind of success without Broberg? I’m not sure.
