Dan Clancy defends Twitch against inconsistent moderation charges

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy recently addressed allegations against the Amazon-owned platform about being inconsistent in its moderation of content on the website. For the uninitiated, like many other online platforms, Twitch follows a set of community guidelines that provide insight into the type and scope of content allowed on the platform.

Dan Clancy argued that the subjectivity of interpreting the aforementioned Community Guidelines is the reason for the supposed inconsistency, which he also insisted was due to content creators often trying to push the envelope while adhering to them:

“When you have something that’s a little bit subjective to the line. This one thing that I see in the chat is, ‘Oh, that’s inconsistent!’ Okay?… The answer is that that’s the nature of this problem when you have very subjective things, whereas in other areas it’s often not very subjective in terms of, you know, hate speech clearly this person said this, as a terrible thing.”

“Stop trying to live so close to the line”: Twitch CEO Dan Clancy comments on the “inconsistency” of the platform’s moderation

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy gave his stance on the allegations against Twitch of being “inconsistent” in the moderation of the website as well as the enforcement of community rules and guidelines. He had the conversation during a broadcast with the platform’s head of community, Mary Kish, as well as VTuber Geega.

To explain the matter to the audience, Dan Clancy used an analogy about the subjective interpretation of closely related colors. He claimed that the boundaries of content acceptable on the platform were constantly being pushed by creators, sometimes leading to a blurring of lines and subsequent problems.

“So what ends up happening is you can find examples. Look, here’s this violet thing and they said it was purple. But this person was purple and they said it was violet. Oh my god! Okay?… So , I encourage people if you try to get so close to the line without going over the line and sometimes you get caught for going over the line… Stop trying to stay so close to the line.”

In other news, prominent Twitch streamer Rachell “Valkyrae” has become the center of controversy after she made remarks critical of Twitch’s Marvel Rivals tournament. The streamer was referring to a rule change that allowed teams to include four professional or highly rated players.
