Jannik Sinner gives his opinion that Novak Djokovic is retiring after just one set in his Australian Open-Semifinal with Alexander Zverev

Novak Djokovic withdrew injured from his Australian Open-Semifinal match with Alexander Zverev.

The semi -final day at the Australian Open did not quite live up to the expectations on the men’s side as both matches fell a little flat.

Djokovic retired towards Zverev after just a set of their meeting, and still struggling with the injury he sustained in his quarter -final match with Carlos Alcaraz.

In the second semi-final, Jannik Sinner Ben Shelton beat in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2, as he came through to the final in Melbourne for the second year in a row.

Sinner will undoubtedly be a favorite when he welcomes Zverev after winning 35 of his last 36 matches on the ATP Tour.

Prior to their major clash, Sinner took the time to come up with his thoughts on Djokovic’s mid -term stop.

“I haven’t seen I warmed up, I didn’t see it live, I looked for how it happened,” he said.

“It’s very unfortunate to see that kind of thing, especially in the semi -finals of the Grand Slams.”

Sinner continued to say that he understands that Djokovic would have only resigned if there was no other choice.

“But if Novak (Djokovic) retires, it means he has big problems,” he said.

“He has previously won here with some physical problems and he always tried to do his best.

“He has given so much so far in his career for this sport.

“It’s unfortunate to see I wish him quick improvement.”

Only time will show how long Djokovic will be on the sidelines, but he avoided a possible return date during his press conference last Friday.

“I still have a doha tournament in a few weeks planned,” he said.

“Whether I have to play it or not, it really depends on how fast I get me.

“But I had success with quick improvements earlier.

“Let’s see it depends only on the muscle and how it responds to treatment.”

The ATP Qatar Open in Doha is set to begin on February 17 and has an all-star line-up with several top ten players scheduled to play.

Jannik Sinner says he ‘still can improve’ when he wins 20th match in a row

Later at his press conference, Sinner was asked if his mentality changed after becoming the number one world in 2024.

“Not really,” he said.

“Of course, it’s a fantastic position to be in, in the back of my head, I also know that I’m 23 years old and I’m not perfect, right?

“I know I still have things to improve. I have certain areas where I can get better. That’s why we work for, right?”

The Italian explained how he strives to be better day by day.

“As I said before, every day is a big challenge,” Sinner said.

“Every day you have another opponent, you try to understand what’s happening.

“Sometimes you have some problems and then try to understand that what works best for that day and is trying to go after it, right?

“Everyone makes mistakes, not? No one is perfect, yes, that’s it.”

The Australian Open final against Zverev is the next challenge for Sinner to overcome, a person he has struggled to get over lately.

Zverev leads head-to-head with Sinner 4-2 after winning their only Grand Slam meetings on a tough course.

Maybe the German will look back on his victory over Sinner on Flushing Meadows in 2023 for inspiration as he secured a huge victory in five sets at Arthur Ashe.
