Starkville-Mississippi State Basketball had its time earlier in the season against South Carolina, where Gamecocks got 35 points in the SEC opening at Humphrey Coliseum.

South Carolina has not won since that match three weeks ago. Bulldogs coach Chris Jans knows what happened in that match will not necessarily dictate the result when No. 14 MSU (15-4, 3-3 SEC) plays in South Carolina (10-9, 0-6) on Saturday (noon, SEC network).

“We’ve been around it long enough to understand that every match is its own small chapter in your season and what happened in that match is really quite irrelevant weeks later,” he said Thursday. “Everyone gets better as the season progresses.”

South Carolina comes after a heartbreaking loss

Gamecocks have not won since they lost to Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum on January 4th. In fact, the match started what is now a loser row of six matches.

Mississippi State needs a faster start on the road

Mississippi State has lost its last two road matches to Tennessee and Auburn. Slow starter was a problem in both of them.

Against Auburn, MSU came back by 10-0. And against Tennessee it was behind 8-0. Bulldogs never led in any of the fighting.

“Like a staff, we’ve been talking about it since the Tennessee game and we have to fix it from the top down,” Jans said.

Murray-Boyles are questionable, according to SEC’s injury report. Jamarii Thomas, who is number two on the team in scores, has been out since January 8 with a knee sprain, but that’s likely. Myles Stue is out indefinitely with a blood clot.

Mississippi State Guard Kanye Clary has not played since November 29 due to an injury to the lower leg and is out again on Saturday.
