The captain vs. Caps: Canucks takes 2–1 win against Washington

Quinn Hughes led his team to a win on Saturday night as Vancouver Canucks took on the wave Washington capitalswith the home layer that holds on to take the 2-10 victory. Hughes scored twice for Vancouver, while Pierre-Luc Dubois scored Washington’s lonely goal. The Kevin Lankin started its first game since January 14, which made 32 savings of 33 shots against. Washington’s Charlie Lindgren managed to stop 23 of 25 shots online.

Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson (no, not it) debuted in the NHL tonight after a solid show with Abbotsford Canucks. He played with Vincent Desharnias and got a taste of Canucks hockey by getting caught in his own zone for a minute and a half in the second period. However, Petterson’s debut was not the only lineup shake as almost every line had members changed around when the puck was dropped.

Washington came out of the gates flying and oozing with confidence as they caught Canucks in their own zone for most of the first period. This should not come as a surprise to Canucks fans as Vancouver slow starts have been consistent this season. Despite having a few Faceoffs in the capitals of the capitals, they lost their draw and ended up being forced back to the lankin. Any options for carrying the puck out were negated by Washington’s stiff defense.

Desharnais was encouraged to stumble with just a little less than 10 minutes into the first period, giving the capitals the first power play in the game. Still, Washington’s best chance came directly after Power Play as the Lankin pigeons to try to grab the puck and left the web open to Lars or to tilt the puck in. However, with a no-go shot, the game turned around for Vancouver. Great prior treatment by Nils Höglander helped get the puck back to Hughes, who weaved through Washington’s zone to score a backhand shot. While Washington had the offensive chance, it was Vancouver who ended the piece with a lead.

The tidy goal of Hughes was followed up by an unfortunate call to Washington after Martin Feharing stumbled Danton Heinen and sent Canucks on Power Play. Vancouver’s Power Play had the usual suspects on it, with Conor Garland who took a place in front of the net. Washington continued their pressure towards the end of Vancouver Man-Advantage, which brought the puck back into the Canucks’ zone and forced the lankin to get a few diving savings to keep scoring 1-0.

Vancouver ended the period of a power play drawn by Höglander, which was stumbled by Washington’s John Carlson. The scary tip had a big first period, which made a strong effort to get a helper on Hughes’ goal (with a passport that, although, could have got him bench if it had not been scored on) and helped with ignite the line of self, Pettersson (F) and Linus Karlsson. His Assist marks his 100. Career NHL Point.

The second period started with a smell when Boeser knocked the puck to JT Miller, who tore in Washington’s zone and almost narbed the other goal for Canucks, no thanks to Lindgren’s goal post. This missed chance did not prevent Vancouver from driving to their next goal as some smart ones passing by Boeser and Filip Hronek let Hughes slide across the Blueline and hide in his second of the game.

Scoring did not prevent Vancouver from continuing their pressure. A few chances of Miller were just denied by Lindgren. Canucks so noticeably looser to start the period and experiment with passages with longer range to break out the puck and send fresh players on partial breaks-appropriate to the frame. A special chance was negated due to an offside call.

The back and forth waves of fast pace continued into the third period, with each team turning around turns around each other’s zones. Not a single flute was blown up until 6:12 in the period. Shortly after, both teams went another 5:44 without a flute. Vancouver endeavored to join the neutral zone in the hope of stopping all Washington combacks, which is something that is separated from the team’s previous matches.

During one of Washington’s stints in Vancouver’s zone, the puck found its way to the lankin, where a crop of both Canucks and capitals encrypted around the crisis to grab it. The puck jumped out of Aliaski Potras’ stick and found Dubois who cut his team’s deficit into one. The capitals continued their swarming of Vancouver’s zone and benefits from the inorganization of the home -day to get more chances to tie the game.

The last five minutes turned out to be the most important thing for Canucks, just as it has tended to be throughout this season. Leaders with only one goal had Vancouver needed to lock things down and protect the single goal they had if not added it. From one won a draw in the neutral zone, Vancouver was able to hold the puck in the capitals zone up to two minutes mark. When Washington made a step to establish himself in Vancouver’s zone, the Garland pucked the puck along the boards to prevent Lindgren from leaving the net. As the capitals of the capitals began to move, Phil di Giuseppe pucked the puck and shot, with Lindgren only just came back to knock it away from the net. A wave of Washington pressure bent Canucks, but a sharp block and bonding at the Faceoff dot from Miller helped prevent them from breaking.
