Earthquake off the Maine Coast rattles New England

An earthquake centered off the coast of Maine rattled the region on Monday and caused mild to moderate shaking in the state as well as in parts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The US Geological Survey registered the earthquake as a storm of 3.8 that hit shortly before 10:30. The epicenter was off the coast of York Harbor, Maine, about 45 miles southwest of Portland.

National Weather Service has not issued any tsunami watches, warnings or warnings in the wake, and so far there have been no reports of deaths or significant injuries.

The event was the most powerful earthquake measured in the northeastern United States since April, when an earthquake with a strength of 4.8 hit near Lebanon, New Jersey. That shiver was the most intense in northeastern for more than a decade, According to the USGS records.

Earthquakes in the northeast are relatively rare, which means that even less shaking can sometimes cause harm because the region is not as prepared for earthquakes as the country’s seismic hot spots.
