Sterling K. Brown & James Marsden starring in Hulu Thriller Series Paradise

ComingsOon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur spoke with Sterling K. Brown and James Marsden sore The new hulu series Paradise. Brown and Marsden discussed working with this is us’ Dan Fogelman about the project that collaborated on sets and more.

“Paradise is set in an exclusive community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals,” says the show for the show. “But this calm explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a study with high efforts takes place.”

The first three episodes of Paradise will premiere at Hulu on January 28, 2025.

Brandon Schreur: Sterling, you have obviously worked with Dan before on this is us. I think it’s fair to say that this show is a little different in many ways. There are a lot of drama in both shows that really draw on the heart strings, but Paradise is so full of twists that had me on the edge of my seat. When you first got the word that Dan made this new show for Hulu and wanted you to be in it, what was your reaction when you read through the manuscript for the first time? Was that what you expected?

Sterling K. Brown: You know I don’t know what I was expecting. I was wondering if it would be that this is us because he said to me, ‘it’s completely different. It’s a very different character, it’s not like Randall at all, but I think you could do something special with it. ‘Then I read it and I was like,’ Oh, you see me. ‘ Do you know what I mean? As I appreciated that someone who has seen me make a character for so long, the belief in me had that I could do something else.

It was a question about, ‘When do we start?’ It wasn’t even a question about, ‘I don’t know I have a few other things going on.’ I was like ‘No, this is the project.’ I told my agent, my manager who lets clear everything else out because we will make this thing happen.

Sure I love it. James, you are very fun to see in this as Cal Bradford. You are so good just generally playing really sympathetic characters and translating that energy on the screen. Here it is really cool because you are super sympathetic, but at the same time you have a lot of secrets, potentially. A lot happens to Cal. I’m curious about how this role is compared to some of your other recent projects like Sonic The Hedgehog or Jury Duty. Is it fun to get to play someone who is sympathetic but also have so many layers for him?

James Marsden: Yes, that’s my favorite thing about it, really. And that it is in such a sharp contrast to the other projects that you just mentioned. It couldn’t be more different from jury or sonic. But yes, it takes a very different tone. Variety is the spice of life. I get excited about playing different types of roles and different moods and genres.

With this, Dan found me at Emmys last year. He was like ‘Hi, I have something for you I feel like you’re a little perfect for it would you look?’ I read the manuscript and was excited to get into it.

I also liked that with this character there is room for charisma, there is room for a sense of humor and there is room for fallability. There is room for deficiencies in this character. You don’t just see this creaking clean, picture-perfect president that is a stiff bore. You see someone who is a human. That’s really what attracted me to the role.

Brown: The president is knocking. He knocks.

The funniest president ever. The two of you share a lot of scenes throughout the show, and there are a lot of different tones that these scenes take. I just wonder what it was like to work together. Some moments are so intense while others are pretty funny when you just go back and forth. How was it to work with each other?

Brown: A joy, man. I’m down with James. He is a cool guy and he is a great actor. In most of these scenes, frankly, he had the brother of what to do because Cal Bradford is talking. As a lot. I was like, all I really had to do was listen and look at James’ eyes, and things just happened kind of magical. He is incredibly gracious, friendly and amazing.

Marsden: And the generosity was reciprocated with him. This man doesn’t have to say a word and you feel the weight of his presence. It’s really, really, addictive, actually. But we had some yaks. Is it yaks or yucks?

Brown: Yucks.

Marsden: Yucks. It’s been a long day. We had actual, big woolen mammoths that came to put a day! (Laughs). We messed around. I loved that he had a sense of humor because there is a component in their relationship where they should be doing well. And Cal was like ‘I want to make it my challenge to crack this nut and make him loosen, relax and watch a movie.’ Then, when it became real, Sterling openly understood the task. And I tried the best I could.

Brown: He did

Marsden: We both knew what it took when the scenes got really heavy.

Brown: We had a good time.

Marsden: Yes, it didn’t take away from the good time.
