Arizona State Holding Colorado Winless in Big 12 Play

Adam Miller scored 18 points, Alston Mason ended with 17, and Arizona State hung on to beat Scuffling Colorado 70-68 in Boulder, Colo., Tuesday night.

Shawn Phillips Jr. Scored 13 points and Basheer Jihad contributed 11 to Sun Devils (12-8, 3-6 BIG 12). BJ Freeman, who came in on Tuesday an average of 13.0 points per Competition, left the game due to a seeming leg or thigh injury after scoring three points in four minutes of court time.

Phillips also pulled into nine rebounds.

Trevor Baskin had 19 points, and Julian Hammond III and Bangot Dak scored 13 pieces for Buffaloes (9-11, 0-9), who are still looking for their first conference victory.

Sun Devils opened a 12-point lead in the first two-plus minutes of the second half, but Colorado continued to chip away at his deficit. Sebastian Ranclik hit a 3-pointer, and the basin converted a setback to tie the game of 43 with 12:21 back.

Jihad was then hit by a technical, and Hammond hit the two subsequent free kicks to give Buffaloes their first lead of the game at 45-43.

Arizona State’s next five points came from the Free Castle Line and the game went back and forth over the next few minutes. However, Sun Devils soon began to pull away, but got a three-point game from Mason and hit two more free kicks before Miller drained a jumper to make it 57-53 ASU with 7:12 back.

Miller’s fourth 3-pointer at night expanded the lead to 62-57, but Colorado later answered with Daks Dunk and Free Casting, making it a two-point game, 64-62.

Arizona State missed the other end, and Rancik’s running layup tied the affair with 1:54 back. However, Jihad responded with a three-point game to put Sun Devils up 67-64 with 1:31 back.

Shortly after the teams traded turns, Colorado’s Andrej made Jakimovski and Jihad each two free kicks before Ranclik was buried in a 3-point attempt. He only made two bad shots with 16 seconds to go to cut the buffalo deficits to 69-68, and Sun Devils turned the ball with 11 seconds left.

Ranclik missed a corner 3-point attempted four seconds, Phillips split a few free kicks two seconds later, and Ranclik was out on a semi-court heave on the buzzer.

Arizona State led 33-26 at the break.
