Work will undo to extend the BBC License fee
The BBC License fee dies as millions of Britons are aware that they do not need a TV; They can get all the entertainment and news they want on the Internet. But don’t suppose it will go quiet. On the contrary, we could end up with something even worse. Bloomberg reports today that the government is considering expanding the requirement to buy a TV license for people using streaming services. In other words, download a movie from Netflix and you will have to pay the BBC.
Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, apparently denies that the idea is under ‘active consideration’ along with the idea of funding the BBC through general taxation, but her department has also said that BBC’s charter review will soon be published will include a number of options. It sounds like plausible discretion: We are not considering expanding the license fee at this time, but we can do well when the charter is published.
Any attempt to pursue non-licensing fees for streaming movies on Netflix is bound to generate a lot of anger
There is a large lobby – not limited to the BBC itself – which seems to believe that the license fee is the epitome of civilization and that the world would fall in should it be abolished.
