Five people were shot, two of whom were killed, in a shooting that police are investigating in South Memphis Wednesday afternoon, the Memphis Police Department said.

Police responded to the shooting right after 7 p.m. 15.30 in the College Park neighborhood with a heavy police -presence along the street bordering up to Lemoyne-Owen College to the north. The college said it was not affected by the shooting.

“Preliminary information indicates that a disturbance arose inside the home that led to an exchange of shots,” said MPD -Lt Louis Brownlee during a press conference.

When police arrived, they found a man dead on stage. Four people, three men and one woman, were led to different hospitals in critical condition. One of the men died in the hospital, Brownlee said.

All the victims were adults according to Brownlee, but he said he was unable to give exact ages during the press conference 16.45.

He also said it seemed that the shooting was “contained inside the home” and asked for everyone with information about the shooting to call crimestoppers on (901) 528-2274.

Parts of Walker Avenue outside Lemoyne-Owen-Campus were blocked by police cars and MPD chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis could be seen going into the crime scene.

The college said in an E -mail declaration that it was not affected, did not enter into a lockdown and that it would continue its usual business.

“The safety and well-being of our campus community is always our highest priority,” said Tara Dunn-Ross, head of Lemoyne-Oen College. “We are aware of the situation and in communication with local authorities. At this point there is no threat to our campus and the operations will continue as usual.”

This is an evolving story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
