TV Talk: ‘Recruit’ returns; Michael Keatons ‘Goodrich;’ WTAE hires reporter

Netflix’s “The Recruit” is a poppier, more bubblegum spion show than Paramount+ with Showtime’s Serious, Dour and more authentic apparent “Agency.” But the “recruitment” is also more fun, a little more of a lark that gang aside could probably survive on a TV network.

No wonder the “recruiter” comes from Alexi Hawley, author and showrunner from ABC’s “The Rookie.”

Now streaming his second season with six episodes, “Recruitment” picks up just where season is a slack: Newbie CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) was held captive by mysterious blonde Karolina (Maddie Hasson) who claims to be the daughter of the earlier CIA -Active Max (Laura Haddock). Karolina shoots Max in the chest. AnnnnnndDDDD, Cliffhanger!

When the new season begins, Owen Max Dead declares as the CIA catches and tries to transform Karolina (alias nichka) into a double agent. As the series continues, the show’s supportive role crew becomes more involved in this season’s mission.

“When you start a show, you’re not quite sure how everything is going to pop,” Hawley said in an interview last week. “And then the other, you realize there’s some genius there with this casting you want to write to them.”

The new season also explores Owen’s back story, the loss of his father and a childhood friend in South Korea who finds out the plot.

“Like a guy built to jump into the deep end without seeing as a trait, which of course is the stupidest thing to do when you are in the CIA I would start him in a place where he had learned Some things he tried to grow up, ”Hawley said. “But at the end of the day, as much as he tried to do better, he falls back on his instincts, who have to see before he jumps. It is part of the superpower, but at the same time leans into this idea that his actions have consequences that are now much more serious than they used to be. “

Hawley has a como in the “Recruitment” season two finals as a submarine manager, as Hawley said they managed to film in an actual American marine boat Tower’s Bridge was filmed on top of a yacht).

“It was a practical decision” to appear on the camera, Hawley said, noting that the show was also filmed in the CIA and the US Department of State this season. “I had become accustomed to jumping through the security braces that you have to jump through to get permission, so for me it was the easiest thing to do: Be the director and the actor with a really small crew.”

‘Goodrich’

Pittsburgh -native Michael Keaton is on a strange series of films that hardly open in theaters and then goes directly to Max. Last year there was “Knox Geat Away”, which he also directed, and this week there is “Goodrich” (February 20, Max) playing Keaton as Andy Goodrich, who becomes a single father of his 9-year-old old twins when his wife enters a 90-day rehabilitation program.

Written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Rome-Com movie Vets Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (“Father of the Bride”), “Goodrich” follows Keaton’s character when he again connects with his daughter (Mila Kunis) from his First marriage and learn to be a better father for all his children.

Too long (almost two hours) and too obvious (Goodrich is a good but forgetful guy who has to learn to spend less time at work and more time with his family), it’s understandable why viewers have never heard of “Goodrich.” Skip it over it and stream “Knox”, still at Max, instead.
