Almiron became an international star during his previous two-year-old Stint in Atlanta. He was the club’s first appointed player in 2017 and an important part of Atlanta United’s 2018 MLS Cup title.

Despite constantly fought for a starting position in his time in the Premier League, he is still an important player with his national team, and the World Cup in 2026 is a real opportunity for the South American side. He now returns to MLS as a more mature footballer, hardened by the Premier League game and by unfulfilled expectations.

Almiron’s return in Atlanta coincides with the club’s intention to become an MLS title competition in 2025. After winning the MLS Cup final in 2018, Atlanta United has since struggled to win on a consistent basis. The club’s front office was revised after former President Darren Eales left Atlanta to become Newcastle’s CEO in 2021. He was replaced by former Seattle Sounder General Manager Garth Lagerwey, who received the CEO title in Atlanta.

Former Inter Miami Sports Director Chris Henderson joined Atlanta as his new chief football officer in December. Henderson’s rent was followed by the appointment of Ronny Deila as head coach. Almiron is expected to be one of several new signings to Atlanta this winter. The club is in negotiations to sign Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.

In 68 matches for Atlanta from 2017 to 2019, Almiron contributed 22 goals and 30 assists. During that time, he was one of MLS’s most recognizable players with his strike partner Josef Martinez. Under manager Tata Martino (who resigned as Inter Miami’s main coach in 2024), Almiron and Martinez broke out as stars in North America. Martino built a quick pace transitional style around the two South Americans who took the league by storm and inspired the city of Atlanta.

Almiron’s return will receive lots of attention status. How quickly he adapts to his new teammates and to the weight of being a star male after year as a supportive actor in Newcastle will be fascinating to see.

How did we get here with Almiron and Newcastle?

Newcastle fans only want Almiron a loving goodbye and acknowledge that Paraguay International was an important player during a period of much upheaval.

But the 11-22-23 Premier League campaign was the exception when it came to the final product of Almiron. Only 12 goals were scattered over the other six seasons, and for all his efforts and energy, decision making in the last third was always a shortage.

Either way, Eddie Howe extracted huge improvement from Almiron, and for more than two years he was the first choice for right -wing. However, he has only played 157 Premier League minutes this season, and there is an acceptance from all parties that his time on Tune side had reached a natural conclusion. Maybe it should even have come before, given that Almiron had been available for sale in the past year.

But with Harvey Barnes, who is currently injured, many Newcastle fans question the logic of letting a forward to leave a shortage of attacking depth.

Nevertheless, profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) mean that a sale of some form is important, and with Almiron, which is considered applicable, Newcastle has picked up a reasonable fee for him. However, it represents a risk whose injuries affect their forward.
