Rating of Groundhogs | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Groundhog Day has been celebrated in the United States since at least February 2, 1886. From Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with its now famous Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, spread tradition throughout America. It is now celebrated everywhere and not just with Groundhogs. There are other weather -expensive animals (and stuffed toys), including a duck, an alligator and even a fish!

These furry critters are usually seen for fun rather than real forecasts. If you are looking for the right deal you can find the National Weather Service’s expected long -term forecast here.

Nineteen groundhogs and alternative earth dogs have been selected to participate in this competition, based on the following qualifications:

  1. They must have forecasted for at least 20 years.
  2. They must be active prognosis from February 2, 2024.

These earth dogs – along with a turtle whose emergence from his winter stuffing (hibernation to reptiles) predicts to come this spring, and a prairie dog statue whose shade at sunrise predicts how long it will be until spring arrives – has been classified and ranked based on their accuracy over the past 20 years using average temperature average for the US every year from 2005 to 2024. You can find more information about participants here Offsite link.

Without all, here are the most accurate earth dogs of the United States to date.

First place: Staten Island Chuck

Also known as Charles G. Hogg, Staten Island Chuck lives in the New York City Staten Island Zoo. Despite being so reliable to predict the weather, his behavior can be a little unpredictable. He once bored with the mayor of New York City!

SECOND PLACE: GENERAL BEAREGARD LEE

As Georgia’s official weather forecast lives General Beauregard Lee in Weathing Heights, his Jordhog-Size Mansion at the Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson, Georgia. We hear that he is a fan of hashbrowns.

Third place: Land Lil

Lander Lil is not a Groundhog, but a bronze statue of a prairie dog residing in Lander, Wyoming, because of the local post office. She was modeled on a real live prairie dog that lived in this area. In 2001, Lander Lil was stolen and a search party was organized to find her. She was later found on the city’s dump and returned home.

Special mention: Punxsatawney Phil

Although he is not the most accurate seasonal prognostic, we would be abandoned not to honor the longest -driven weather -defunct Groundhog in the United States, Punxsutawney Phil. A beloved national celebrity, the legend says he has prophesied when spring would arrive from his hole on Gobbler’s dial since 1887. How has he lived so long? The answer is simple … “Groundhog nog”, which was fed to him every fall at Punxsutawney’s annual Groundhog -Picnic!

Punxsutawney Phil will be held by a member of the inner circle on February 2nd 2018.
