In 2016, Papini disappeared for 22 days while allegedly on a jogging in Redding, California, when she reappeared, claimed she was kidnapped by two masked Latin American women.

After a year-long investigation, however, authorities discovered that Papini orchestrated the kidnapping with his ex-boyfriend. She was arrested in 2022 and released from prison in August 2023.

After the truth about Papini came out, Davari revealed in a 2022 interview with Inside Edition That they were allegedly dated when she was 20 years old and he was 15 years old.

“She’s a forced onion,” Davari said of Papini. “She wouldn’t talk to you for three or four days, and then suddenly there would be a great story about what happened.”

Davari claimed that Papini told several lies when they dated, including that she was surfing and had a heart disease. He also said he did not believe in the first news that she was kidnapped.

“I was like, there’s no way. She is doing well. I promise you she is doing well. There’s just no chance she was kidnapped, ”he said.

To pull the crime, one of Papini’s exes, a man named James Reyes, helped her escape her home in Redding to hide in Costa Mesa – 600 miles south of her home – for three weeks.

When she reappeared, she told police that two Latin American women kidnapped her with gun and tortured her while she was in captivity.

But her lies fell apart after investigators found DNA on a clothes that would lead back to Reyes that dropped her out in Woodland when she decided to reappear.

In March 2022, Papini was arrested and charged with making false statements to federal agents and postal fraud. A month later, she formally pleaded guilty and admitted that her kidnapping requirement was a hoax.
