Hawaii Mayor signs emergency proclamation due to storm, updating closure list

(Bivn) – Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda signed an emergency proclamation on Thursday as serious weather is approaching Hawaii Island.

The big island already experienced a day of strong wind throw as a powerful winter -low pressure system draws a strong cold front from the northwest, down the island chain tonight and Friday. A warning with high wind remains in effect for the whole island as well as one Flooding clock. ONE Winter Storm Warning are in place for the summits of Maunakea and Mauna Loa.

“We encourage our residents to remain prepared and take extra caution when severe weather moves across the island,” Mayor Alameda said in a news message. “The crews work hard to make sure roads are clear and to restore power to traffic cruisers. We ask residents to stay away from roads if possible when weather conditions deteriorate and remain associated with our emergency messages. “



Alameda’s proclamation allows the county to “streamline its answer and coordinate resources as heavy rain and high wind are expected,” the news message states.
