Chance of snow in Seattle this weekend

Thursday will be a transition day as a major change in the weather pattern will initiate rain, cooler temperatures and a chance for lowlands snow through next week.

Here’s a look at the daily breakdown:

Last dry day in Seattle

By the numbers:

It will be dry and cloudy throughout most of the day Thursday. High temperatures will be cooler, about 44 degrees.

The first distinctive frontal system in weeks hits later in the evening, bringing widespread rain and mountain snow. Snow levels will be between 3,000 and 4,000 feet tonight. Travel will be difficult for the next two days over the cascades. One to two feet of snow is possible over the mountain passes (Stevens, Snoqualmie, White and Blewett) for Saturday.

Rain returns to Seattle

The other side:

Late Friday night until early Saturday morning we could see some wet -convergence zone snow for the lowland areas Snohomish or North King Counties. It will be a close call between cold rain and wet snow, with marginal snow levels and temperatures bound out in the low to the mid -30s. Remember that 2 to 3 degrees can make all the difference.

After the sun comes up, most stains will just see light rain showers as temperatures warm. Saturday night brings another shot on the lowlands snow showers when temperatures cool. The best chance for Lowland Snow Saturday night in the Puget Sound area will be north of Everett.

Temperatures will continue to fall on Sunday as Fraser Valley -Snor picks up, and much colder air pushes into the Puget Sound area. At Sunday night, temperatures should be cold enough in the Puget Sound area for snow. While rainfall will be somewhat limited, any scattered showers that fall on Sunday night and Monday morning will probably be snow.

It will be important to follow the prognosis in the coming days as Monday morning commuting could be affected.

Rain-Sne mix in Seattle next week

Temperatures remain very cool next week with the daytime in the mid -30s and low night falls down in the mid -20s. Although no widespread blizzard is expected, any light showers could give more snow during the week. A low pressure system is parked offshore and sends scattered showers inland.

We want a better idea of accumulations as we get closer to the weekend and when our higher resolution weather models come out. We do not expect this to be a major blizzard for the area, but anyone in the larger Puget Sound area can get something Saturday morning through the middle of next week.
