Memphis Basketball has won three games in a row and seven of his last eight.

But a feared road trip to Tulane (11-9, 5-2) is waiting for No. 16 Tigers (16-4, 6-1) Thursday (8 pm, ESPN2). Penny Hardaways team has lost three consecutive matches to Green Wave in New Orleans after starting the 21st century 14-1 there.

Despite a guard schedule similar to Hardaways-Tulane lost 10 players from last season’s team and a rough non-conference showing (6-7), Coach Ron Hunter has stabilized the ship and has Green Wave tied to second place in AAC- the position.

“He lost his entire team, (so) nobody saw it was coming,” Hardaway said during a radio talk after Game Sunday. “We know (Hunter is) want something up in the sleeve when we get down there.”

Here are three things to keep an eye on in front of Thursday’s game.

It’s been almost 50 months since the Tigers have won a game inside Tulanes Devlin Fieldhouse, where Hunter’s team has won three just above Memphis.

Last time Memphis beat Green Wave in Fogelman Arena (December 16, 2020), former All-Conference tip Deandre Williams debuted in a Tigers uniform.

Green Wave’s average victory margin in its three consecutive victories in the home is only 3.3 points. Last season, David Jones missed a couple of 3-Pointers in the last three seconds, giving Tulane an 81-79 victory. In 2023, Green Wave scored 59 the second half of points on the way to a seven-point victory. In December 2021, Alex Lomax’s set -up attempted by a second lost, and Tigers (playing without Williams, Jalen Duren and Emoni Bates) lost by one point.

PJ Carter shows up for Tigers’ Stretch Run?

Memphis’ PJ Carter has had some lovely moments this season. He scored nine points and made some crucial shots in an overtime gain against Uconn at Maui Invitational.

But consistent playing time and production have been difficult to come up with in large parts of the season. Until recently.

Carter scored a season hill 14 points in Sunday’s win over UAB in just 13 minutes. It was another positive step for the former Utsa Roadrunner. In its last three games, Carter is an average of 9 points and shoots 55.5% off the field, including 41.7% from the 3-point line.

“PJ Carter just answers the clock,” Hardaway said. “He does what he does. He is a shooting game. He is driving to the basket now. And he will have to be explained on the floor.”

Carter has history of increasing his game this time of year. Last season he scored 14.7 points a game over Roadrunners’ last nine games.

Tulane Basketball Scout Report

The green wave leaned heavily on a strong core in each of their three wins over the Tigers of New Orleans: Sion James, Kevin Cross and Jaylen Forbes, among others.

This trio is gone now and Tulane has fought without it.

But after walking 6-7 in non-conference games, the green wave has stabilized slightly. They have won three of their last four (most recently a road gain over Rice on Saturday). The only loss was an 80-77 decision at Temple.

Kaleb Banks, which transferred from Indiana, has a breakout season. The 6-foot-8 peak leads the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (7.4). Guard Rowan Brumbaugh (the team’s second -leading goal scorer at 14.5 per match) is number two in AAC in Assists per. Fight (4.7).
