A reunited Nirvana and Lady Gaga lifted the roof in this mammoth charity job

“If I lose everything in the fire I’ll send all my love to you,” sang Billie Eilish And Billie Joe Armstrong in the unfortunately too apt opening song of this mammoth charity concert to raise money for victims of Los Angeles-Brande. Green Day’s Last Night On Earth was actually released in 2009 but got a new opinion afterwards The fires that raged over 50,000 hectares of the city29 people kill and destroy over 10,000 homes and businesses.

If the 40 years ago Live Aid has taught us something, it is that musicians will gather for a charity concert when needed, especially if the word “… Help” is part of the title. And then FireAid – billed as “a night of music and solidarity” – then performances from A staggering series of musicians including Joni MitchellPink, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks and, Er, Earth, Wind & Fire. It also saw a surprise, brutal and glorious Nirvana genus with a quartet of female vocalists – St Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Violet Grohl (Dave’s Daughter) – takes over Kurt Cobain’s vocal tasks (at race, school, territorial pissings and all of excuses). It was extraordinary.

In fact, so full of star management was firaid that it took place across two LA playing venues: the Kia forum and Intuit Dome. Short sets from each artist were ice pedd videos with the first responders and victims. As with all such long endeavors – the concert is actually still going on and extending into its fifth hour – the combined moments of tremendous gripple with magic forms from Longueurs.

Billy Crystal emphasized the sharpness of the situation by appearing on stage in the same clothes – the hoodie, Beaniehatten, the works – which he was wearing when he fled his Pacific Palisades house of 46 years in the evening of January 7. Everything was destroyed. Still joking Crystal to look like someone who had just robbed a 7/11 and said humor should co-blow with pain. In fact, he said that one possession that his family found in the glow was a rock from the garden with the word “laughter” inscribed on it. Then U2 donated $ 1 million (doubled by ex-microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer that matches any donation), Alanis Morissette Barrel and we were properly off.

Rapper Anderson .Paak brought Raucous Funk energy and, together with Prince partner sheila e on drums and rapper Dr. Dre, who still appeared Dre and 2pacs California’s love. “This is one of the biggest nights in the Los Angeles story tonight,” said Paak, a little over-developed things. Then came the first highlight.

Joni Mitchell's performance was huge moving

Joni Mitchell’s performance was hugely moving – Scott Dudelson

As 81 years, Joni Mitchell’s voice is weak and weathered. But sitting on a detailed gold-edged Louis XIV style throne and wearing shades, keeping a jeweled sugar cane and with his white hair that cascades under a black hat, Mitchell Kia Arena owned. Her reproduction of both sides was now fantastic, largely – weird – because of her vocal vulnerability. Mitchell’s observation that “something is lost, but something is achieved in living every day” was met with a huge cheer. It felt like a dose of royal perspective from one of the early greatnesses.

The song was recorded in LA. And this is where this concert was most effective. The host of songs that were recorded in, or written about, reminded us of the site’s musical pedigree and what could be too easily lost. Stephen Stills sung Buffalo Springfields for what it is worth before staying with Graham Nash to teach your children, the black crows and slashes performed Led Zeppelin was going to California and the Red Hot Chili pepper fruits did californication. Olivia Rodrigo sang Deja Vu (“Bilture to Malibu …”), while Stevie Nicks gave us a sublime landslide. Nashville singing Jelly Roll’s coverage of Bob Seger’s Hollywood Nights was a belter.

There were some weird moments, such as when John Fogerty Song have you ever seen the rain? (Not enough, would be my guess.) The section of saving dogs could have been trimmed. But overall, the tone was well doomed. Katy Perry was appropriately underestimated, like pink – what voice. The big surprise, however, was Nirvana. Could this be the start of a fuller reunion? Let’s see. Rotating female singers were a master stroke (have they taken a magazine out of the Reformed Linkin Park’s book?). And boy, Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear still made rock.

Eilish and her brother Finneas performed a delicate acoustic set towards the end, while a youthful looking Stevie Wonder delivered pure sonic conditioner (along with stitches to superstition and then flea after higher soil). Lady Gaga Finished things with shallow and always remember us in this way from a star is born, and a new song she had written especially, apparently called all I need is time. As she sat at a magnificent Steinway, she channeled the emotional showmanship of Freddie Mercury.

But it was the red hot chili pepper fruits – who wisely avoided covering Jimi Hendrix fire that they famously did in Woodstock ’99 when the festival burned – which best summarized this epic night. The song was inevitably under the bridge a paean to Los Angeles. “The city she loves me,” Anthony Kiedis sang, touching his chest as he looked out over the crowd. “Lonely as I am, together we cry together.”
