Winter Storm warning in effect as powerful snow, strong winds hit Oregon and Washington

Portland, Ore. (Katu) – A winter storm warning is in effect in parts of Oregon and Washington, as a winter storm system has begun to drop moderately to heavy snow in the cascades and blue mountains, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

NWS issued a winter storm warning for heights over 3,000 feet until 1 p.m. 16 on Saturday.

Heavy snow is expected over 3,000 feet with sneaking cum on 8 and 18 inches, NWS said. Wind throw up to 45 km / h is possible along exposed knightsops. Conditions will be particularly treacherous on the top slopes of eastern Washington Cascades comb.

The coastal area will begin to accumulate snow showers Friday night to Sunday. Accumulations will be minimal compared to the Cascades Models project 1 ”-3”.

Katu-meteorologists say our region should prepare for snow-covering levels to fall in the showers coming through this weekend:

  • Today: 3,000 feet by the end of the day
  • Saturday: 1,000 feet in the evening
  • Sunday: 500 feet, with snow possible on most local hills and most of the Columbia River Gorge
  • Monday: 500 feet, with wet snow possible in the morning hours for most of the gap

Looking forward to next week, colder air could bring wet snow mixed down to the sea surface in the morning. While accumulation in Portland’s lowlands remain uncertain, areas such as West Hills and heights over 500 feet could see measurable snowfall and possible school days.

In addition to the heavy snowfall, officials say conditions will be combined to create low visibility, which gives difficult driving conditions. Wind throw could also reduce the tree branches.

Residents are encouraged to consider delaying the journey if possible. If you are going to travel, do it with extreme caution.

NWS advises to bring a winter storm kit with, including items such as cover chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothes. Also take water, a first aid kit and everything else that can help you survive if you are stranded.
