Malik Reneau, Myles Rice comes up short vs Purdue

West Lafayette – turnover and ugly late belongings fumbled away Indiana Basketball’s upset bid Friday night on rival Purdue. To classify Hoosiers after a loss of 81-76:

Starters

Myles Rice: 5/10

Pretty quiet night for the most part. Neutral in many ways, neither disastrous nor effective. Postponed to other guards who are better engaged in the game.

Anthony Leal: 7/10

Probably as well as he has played in an Indiana uniform. The numbers (six points, five rebounds, four assists) tell part of the story. But Leal’s work percentage, effort and intensity matched all the building that he will never visit again as a player. Indiana needed a tone setter to trigger her performance in its most hostile road environment. The fifth -year senior from Bloomington South provided it and more before getting out in the last minutes.

Mackenzie Mgbako: 8/10

Another very good game offensively, especially early. Large baskets to start the game kept Purdue (17-5, 9-2) from really getting on top of Indiana (14-8, 5-6) and he was one of a number of Hoosiers who enjoyed success in attacking the dribble. An evening when Indiana needed wings to play big and small, he delivered. Finished with a game-high 25 points.

Malik Reneau: 2/10

So just as out of the pace as he has at the short time since his return. Fouls had a good bit to do with it. It made Indiana’s need to push the ball through Oumar Ballo, which proved much more of a discrepancy. Played only eight minutes.

Oumar Ballo: 7/10

Proven a nightmare cover for Purdues Post Players. Caleb Furst and Trey Kaufman-Renn spent the night fighting with violations because they couldn’t control Ballo’s range, size or physical inside. His last tracks (14 points, five rebounds) did not do justice to his influence on the game. A difference manufacturer begins to quit.

Reserves

Trey Galloway: 8/10

Matt Painter paid him respect with some tough defensive covers, and Galloway still had an impact on his last visit to the Mackey Arena. He ended with 15 points, five assists and six revenue, the last number the only red in his headbok. Indiana needed one of Rice or Galloway to step up and match Braden Smith’s creativity and control over the game. Not necessarily his score, but the hand is a good point guard on the steering wheel at all times. It was Galloway Friday night.

Luke Goode: 7/10

A game not made for Reneau was ideal for Goode. Purdue’s rotations were interrupted by violations and wings had to try to help either after touching or dribbling penetration. It left Goode with a number of good looks he didn’t waste. He ended with 13 points and three made 3s, which affected the game at both ends of the floor.

Bryson Tucker: reach

First night back from a three-game absence due to injury. Woodson protected his minutes accordingly. Played sparingly in his first trip to MacKey.

Langdon Hatton: reach

Went nothing to hurt the cause of a short como from the first half.
