The young woman in the center of a fake cancer fraud is the focus of ABC News’ latest documentary series, “Scamanda.”

The four-part documents that are based on a popular Podcast With the same name comes the story of Amanda Riley, who announced that she had been diagnosed with phase three Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012. But not everything was as it looked.

Riley began a blog called “Lymphom can suck it” that mistakenly reported to loved ones, her church and society as a whole, that she was dying. Her lie, which captivated thousands online, also turned out to be pretty lucrative.

She reap the benefits of her carefully curated online presence and caused tens of thousands of dollars from people to cover the cost of her alleged medical expenses. Hoax continued until 2019, when a close friend sent an anonymous tip to investigating producer Nancy Moscatiello, who spent five years revealing the lie.

Riley was a young wife, mother and devoted Christian Living in San Jose, California.

Riley combined a scheme to request donations from people to help her News message.

She went into “great lengths” to hold the charad up, shaved her head, counterfeit medical information, convinced family members to repeat her claims, give false testimonies and attack anyone who suggested she lie about her illness.

Federal prosecutors say the government identified 349 people offering over $ 100,000 to cover the cost of Riley’s fabricated medical expenses. In May 2022, Riley pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection with the request. She was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered paid $ 105,000 in refund to the victims.

Riley is currently serving the rest of her verdict in a housing center center in southern California after she was released from a Texas prison in December 2024, per. ABC News.
