Cervical screenings – which were previously called a ‘smear test’ – are a free NHS health test offered to women and all people with a cervix between 25 to 64 years.

They can help prevent cervical cancer by controlling for human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be transmitted through sexual contact.

Currently throughout London, only 58 percent of 25 to 49-year-olds are attending their cervical screening, with participation significantly higher for 50 to 64-year-olds of 70 percent.

In an attempt to raise the degree of participation, the NHS promotes the importance of the test through an annual week of consciousness.

This year’s campaign aimed to debunk misunderstandings about cervical screening including tips to help you feel more comfortable during your appointment, such as listening to your own music – which may include tunes from Harry Styles.

In a promotional video, Laura Adlington, 35,: ‘I will bring in some Harry Styles the next time I have my cervical screening. I think that would make it so much better.

‘Watermelon sugar high! It goes down very well. ‘
