Kendrick Lamar, who performed at Governors Ball Music Festival 2023, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in New York, June 11, 2023.

Sunday 2nd February, 67Th The Grammy Awards -Ceremony not only takes place in a unique context in the wake of the Los Angeles fires, but that is likely to be the scene for an unprecedented moment in its story. Rapper Kendrick Lamar is nominated in four categories, including this year’s song for his diss -track “Not Like Us” and twice in the best rap song for the same song and for “Like that”, his first jab, the one who triggered the feud between him and Drake, the second heavyweight of North American rap music.

Diss tracks, songs in which one artist verbally attacks another is a musical exercise that has existed since the early days of the hip-hop culture, from KRS-One’s “South Bronx” (1987) to “Hit Em Up” ( 1996) of 2pac. For 2pac, born Tupac Shakur, this track was partly responsible for his attack in 1996 and his rival, the notorious big one the following year. Some of these songs that Drake’s “Back to Back” have been nominated in the category Best Rap Performance at the American Music Awards Ceremony but never in Major Categories like the best song and record of the year. No rap diss -track has ever won a prize. With “not like us” this may be changing.
