Edmonton’s spring -like temperatures earlier this week have quickly changed to bitter cold with lots of snow in the forecast this weekend.

At. At 08:30 on Friday, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for Edmonton, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and other areas around the metropolitan region.

According to the alarm, the snow continues through Saturday afternoon, and another 10 centimeters of snow can be expected from the 20 centimeters that fell throughout Thursday night and Friday.

“We have had a lot of yo-yo-in-temperatures thanks to our jet stream where it swings to the warmer or cooler side, and that pendulum swings back and forth, and that’s what we’ve seen through this forecast period,” said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with environment and climate change Canada.

‘Budget extra time’

Climenhaga said over the next 48 hours that people have to be prepared for temperatures to fall to low at -26 C and -27 C. The significant snowfall is likely to make road conditions less than ideal.

“The big concern in the future is the snow we have already seen and the more snow along the way,” Climenhaga said.

“It will be one of those weekends where you will have to check the weather before you go out.”

Climenhaga said that east-central and northwestern parts of the province, in areas such as Grande Cache and Swan Hills, expect the highest levels of snowfall.

She said hot weather earlier in the week when temperatures rose to heights of 10 ° C or more brought a lot of melting along the roads, and now with a fresh snowfall, and the significant fall in temperature will make roads icy and win to rise Saturday could enable the snow conditions.

“Saturday, the winds pick up significantly, so it’s important to budget extra time and make sure you have the right tires because it’s going to be a really tough walk on the roads,” Climenhaga said.

The cold temperatures are expected to stay around Edmonton over the next few weeks. The Extreme weather response has been activated due to the cold weather and is expected to end on February 15 at 1 p.m. 9

So far this winter, Albertans have experienced heights and low when it comes to temperature. Earlier this month, a snow -suk destroyed highways on highways when RCMP was called to 149 collisions in 20 hours.

Climenhaga said the drastic turn in temperatures this winter is not something out of the norm, but it has certainly been prominent in January.

“The swinging from the hot side of things to the cold side is not out of normality,” Climenhaga said.

“It can feel cracking and feels like it’s not a normal event – but it happens.”

As we enter February, Climenhaga said the long -range forecast for the coming month is expected to be on the colder side.

“There is a good chance that we may see much more during seasonal days than over seasonal in February,” Climenhaga said.
