1 person wounded in daylight shooting in Washington Park in Denver

Denver – Police in Denver are investigating a shooting in Washington Park on Sunday afternoon leaving a person injured.

Officers took a person in custody, police said.

The Denver Police Department first reported the shooting at x at. 14.41, where he later stated that the shooting victim was expected to survive.

Police have not said if the victim was targeted or what may have brought up to the shooting.

There were several witnesses to the shooting, including a woman named Sarah, who asked that Denver7 did not use her last name as part of this report. She decided to take a walk in the park on Sunday to take advantage of the hot winter day.

“I was right next to where everything happened, unfortunately,” she told Denver7. “I heard a tall pop and I looked to the left and saw a man on the ground next to his bike and I thought he had blown up a tire.

Sarah said she continued her turn when the man seemed to have more people helping him.

“Started going down this path behind us, on the outer path here, and then a young man kind of angry talk to himself and jumping around, kind of irregular and cussing and similar things,” Sarah explained.

She tried to give the young man some space.

“At one point he turned around and looked at me and a girl between us, and he said, ‘Don’t take any pictures of me. Don’t take any photos of me, ” she said. ‘ And then he pulled a gun out of the waistband and he shot it in her direction … She didn’t seem to be injured.

Sarah said she called 911 and saw the young man. She said she saw him coming into a red car near the park.

“I can’t really think this would happen in our park,” she said. “It happens everywhere, and it’s scary and sad, and I hope everyone is in order.”

Residents of the quiet Washington Park neighborhood told Denver7 that they heard several shots near S. Downing Street and E. Kentucky Avenue on the western side of the park.

Video of the scene shows a crash involving DPD vehicles and a Hyundai -Sedan at the intersection of E. Kentucky Avenue and S. Corona Street, only a block west of the park.

It is not known if the crash is associated with the shooting. However, a witness told Denver7 that she saw officers hit Hyundai shortly after the shooting and then pull their weapons on the driver.

Denver7 contacted DPD for more information, but the department refused to provide further details of the violent incident in a busy public park in broad daylight.
