Mexico agree to deploy 10,000 troops to the US border in exchange for customs break

Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US -Mexico border in exchange for a one -month delay on President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday.

Sheinbaum announced the message on social media on Monday morning, about 12 hours before the customs were to take effect. Trump and Sheinbaum spoke on Monday and agreed that Mexico will do more to fight drug trafficking into the United States and that the United States will intensify the efforts to block the flow of firearms in Mexico.

Sheinbaum also said that officials with the US and Mexico began conversations about wider trading and security issues.

Trump confirmed the deal in his own post on Truth Socialthat describes the call with Sheinbaum as a “very friendly conversation.”

“I was just talking to President Claudia Sheinbaum from Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation where she immediately accepted to deliver 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of Fentanyl and illegal migrants in our country, ”Trump wrote.

“We also agreed to immediately set the expected tariffs for a period of a month in which we will have negotiations led by State Secretary Marco Rubio, State Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick and High Level representatives. I look forward to participating in These negotiations with President Sheinbaum when we try to achieve a ‘agreement’ between our two countries, “he added.

The deal comes just a few days after Trump announced 25% duties on both Mexico and Canada as well as 10% duty in China. Trump says he was talking to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, but the couple did not reach an appointment. He says they will talk again later Monday.

The tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Tuesday.
