Tigers trades with right -handed pitcher alex faedo to the rays

After being on a deal with Tommy Kahnle (not to mention Jack Flaherty last night), Detroit Tigers apparently felt that they had some flexibility to sell a pitcher. So they had DFA who swung man Alex Faedo, and now they deal with him to the rays.

Kahnle and Flaherty I, Faedo out:

Trade News: Tampa Bay Rays acquires right -hander Alex Faedo from Detroit Tigers to less League Catcher Endson Delgado and cash, sources of ESPN tell. Faedo was a solid contributor to Detroit last year, but became DFA’D after Tigers signed Tommy Kahnle.

Faedo, 29, was approx. 9% better than the league average after results last year, mostly pitching in relief, though his peripheral units were much worse. He is still prior admission, so he gets quite cheap in salary, but since he has no less league settings left, he will have to make Rays’ opening day list or hit exceptions.

On the other hand, the Tigers get a 20-year-old captive view in Enderson Delgado, who is not in Rays’ Top 30, but hit very well as a 19-year-old switch-hitter at Low-A last season and is believed to be a good defender. Lovely get for a dfa’d pitcher, though Tigers may have already known that they could get some value for Faedo when they chose to appoint him for the task.

Aside, “cash” involvement is a bit strange. Usually, if a team traded for a DFA’D player, they would only send cash or a player, not both. The cash, which we have already seen a lot of times, is this season in offerings involving the kids, basically a stand-in for the exceptional requirements price DVS. to pay a little extra to jump to the front of the line. The tigers get a player and cash in this one. It’s atypical. Doesn’t matter. Just atypical.

I do not expect Faedo’s presence in the DFA world to hold any other reliever movements in free agency or trade, but I suspect you never know.
