Myles Garrett Trade Request: Best Team Fits, Contract Affection

Maybe inspired by the NBA trading activity of the last weekend, Cleveland Brown’s Star Edge Rusher and Avid Basketball Fan Myles Garrett released a trade request on social media on Monday morning. Garrett’s post effectively said he is tired of losing and will go to a team that has a better chance of competing for a Super Bowl than Browns – where he has spent the first eight years of his NFL career.

Garrett is 29 years old and one of the best players in the entire league, regardless of position. He ended up in second place in sacks (14.5) and sixth in Pas Rush -Sejrrate (21.5%) this season. However, he also happens to play a premium position. Teams are often willing to spend big money and/or trade with premium draft to land an edge Rusher. Browns have publicly said that they are not intending to trade Garrett, but if that were to change, they could expect to receive very attractive offers. It could mean more choices of the first round, for example, or premium elections and a young star player on a rookie deal.

So while it remains possible that Garrett is not being traded, it is fun to imagine what it would look like if he was moved – and which teams would make the most sense to him. We chose a couple of teams that would at least make sense at some level as Garrett -handing Destinations.

Could Garrett’s contract prevent an agreement?

Before we get to the team fits, a quick word about the information about why Garrett’s contract would be difficult for Cleveland to act. That would be a shock – considering the way the lions have worked over the last few years – if they did not at least reach out to see if they could take a race on this. Detroit tied to 23. Obviously, this is another win-now-team-it has the chance to win the Super Bowl this week. Philadelphia has a bit of a more difficult cap situation than Detroit and had to move some things around to make this work. But Eagles GM Howie Roseman is as aggressive as someone in the league and loves to add star power to his list.

If Eagles lose Super Bowl to Chiefs for the second time in three years – especially if part of the reason is an inability to sack Patrick Mahomes for a big moment – isn’t it out of the possibility that they had look to do this kind of big splashes. It is worth noting that Josh Sweat is also a free agent, which means Eagles could be looking to restore the Edge Rush group.

I could easily see Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills or Texans taking a race at Garrett. Heck, you could also throw the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in here – but the odds of Browns, who acts Garrett to a team in their own division, feels minuscule.

The reason I have clumped the bosses, bills and Texans together here? If Browns traded Garrett, I think they would feel very strong about sending him to an NFC team. That does not mean that Chiefs, Bills, Texans, Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers or any other AFC practitioner couldn’t get him. It might cost that team more To do it than it would cost an NFC team, as the strong probability is that Browns do not want to compete against Garrett at the same conference.
